The Worst Surprise Party Ever

It all started on April 6, 1989. The day Laur was born. Nobody could predict that 28 years later it would be the reason for the worst surprise party ever.

Laur expressed her reluctance to make birthday plans in the group chat between high school friends Laur, Leesh, Keish and I. Leesh, Keish and I made a second "secret" group chat to discuss celebration ideas. In the end we decided to turn an afternoon tea gathering into a mini surprise party. Keish was the one in charge of making sure Laur was free and would be there, as her house was the proposed venue. Somehow Laur found out about the surprise. I suggested we maintain the surprise element by booking a surprise stripper for our classy afternoon tea... then Laur found out about that too.

Fast forward to the day of the "surprise" party. A little confusion led me to believe Laur wouldn't be at her own party, so I arrive at Keish's place without a present or decorations and of course we'd cancelled the stripper. Shortly after arriving I discover Laur is in fact racing back from the coast to be at her party. I then race back to my place to pick up the decorations and present. It was about 3:40pm, I a half hour round trip ahead of me and Laur was due to arrive at 4pm.

Of course I got back after Laur did, then did a little setting up while telling her to pretend I wasn't there. Keish and Leesh had already set most of the food on the table.

After a few minutes the "surprise" was ready.

You might think Laur would be the guest of honour. Here is her "official birthday portrait for the blog".

The true guest of honour was in fact Keish's daughter, Michaela.

She thoroughly enjoyed her first ever Tim Tam.

While Michaela fished the crumbs of her Tim Tam out of her lap, Laur sipped her tea.

Following afternoon tea we migrated to the lounge room and listened to a little music.

The guest of honour was having a fabulous time. She had no idea the party was supposed to be a surprise.

We took a quick group selfie, then parted ways.

It might've been the worst "surprise" party ever, but it was a fun, memorable way to mark the 28th anniversary of Laur's birth.
