Birthday Bonanza

My birthday is January 20 and Grandpa's birthday is February 9, so every year mum insists on a joint celebration. How do you combine a 28th and 92nd? Usually we find ourselves at Baulkham Palace. This year was no different.

Unwittingly, we also celebrated Chinese New Year. The restaurant was still decked out with decorations from the previous night.

Mum booked one table, but we were the only customers inside most of the time, so it seemed like she'd booked one restaurant.

Sometimes I like to be an adventurous foodie. Today was not that day. I had been looking forward to lemon chicken for weeks, so that was my vote for the table's fare.

Some of us shared and other's ordered their own dish.

The service was efficient and friendly. This may seem like an easy feat for a mostly private dining experience, but I've been a member at the only table in a restaurant before where it took so long to bring out our food we were given free dessert. But back to the service at Baulkham Palace. Our lovely waitress brought out the cake and even played the birthday song over the speakers twice while she had trouble lighting the candle.

Mum asked if we enjoyed the Michel's patisserie caramel mudcake she whipped up. Knowing cake baking is a living nightmare for mum I probed about her ingredients. She listed her key ingredients, "caramel and mud."

Our kind waitress delivered our fortunes.

But now that you're expecting to be astonished, I'll have to be extra successful.

She also gave us two roosters.

It was only fair the birthday people took them.

Grandpa adorned his ear with his rooster.

My birthday celebrations were complete, but Grandpa's celebration continued. Aunty Rhonda and Uncle Bruce flew from Queensland and Mum and I had the trip from Penrith to Lilys in Seven Hills.

Mum and I may have endured the longer journey as we kept circling the streets unable to find the carpark entrance. For future reference, ignore your maps app and head to Quinn Avenue.

Impressed by the classy entry, I expected delicious food.

Aunty Rhonda and Uncle Bruce shared a gourmet platter of prawns, lamb cutlets and calamari.

Mum enjoyed her risotto. I too sampled it and agree with her assessment. Grandpa loved his standard eat out order of garlic prawns. The appetiser selection was a decent size.

The photo of my salad is unedited because it deserves to look as bland as it tastes. The waitress informed us the menu would be changing soon. I recommend this salad selection is left behind.

I've chosen to show off the best side of the creme brûlée, ice-cream, biscotti combo because it was amazing.

After a couple of hours escaping the heat the birthday celebrations were complete.
