Native Kitchen and Bar

My friends and I ventured up to Lawson in the Blue Mountains.

Nestled in the tranquility is the quaint Native Kitchen and Bar.

We were greeted with a friendly smile, a seasonal menu

and an autumnal ambience.

My meal choice was omelette with greens.

It turns out the omelette wasn't just served with greens, but also a hint of magic. For only $18 I was treated to literally the best omelette of my life. Sorry mum.

The soup was the good kind of spicy that makes your nose run. Great for clearing out those nasal passages.

The delightful tomato bursts of the bruschetta locally sourced, like the rest of the organic menu.

You can even score your caffeine hit on a tiny chopping board.

Our meals were accompanied by a little live music.

Everyone's empty plates were a visual review of the enchanting cuisine.

For spellbinding omelettes and seasonally inspired decor take the short trip up to Native Kitchen and Bar at Lawson.

A Schnitty Search: The Lappo

I have assigned myself the enviable role of schnitty judge. My mission is to find the best chicken schnitzel around Penrith. The chicken schnitzel (or schnitty) would not be complete without hot chips and a river of gravy. The humble dish is also often served with a little salad for decoration.

My schnitty search began at the Lapstone Hotel, but you'll almost never hear its full name used. Aussies are big on nicknames and even our pubs aren't safe from our slaughter improvement of the English language.

At The Lappo you'll find chicken schnitzels bigger than your face.

Unfortunately that's where the schnitty praise ends. Turn the $21 crumbed cuisine on its side and you discover plywood - thin and dry. The chips were bland, sad potato portions. The river of gravy? Just a medium size puddle.

Don't think The Lappo is just a schnitty place though. The efficient and friendly servers could bring you a whole range of delicious dishes and beverages. After you've ordered and paid for them, of course.

Aside from the food, you'll also find great atmosphere at this lower Blue Mountains pub. Sometimes live bands set the scene for a bit of a boogie. You can always enjoy a chat and some drinks with your mates, while catching some sport on one of the many screens.

Come to The Lappo for everything, but their chicken schnitzel.

As chief schnitty judge I will not rest until I've found the best. The schnitty quest continues.

The Need for a Feed: 2773

2773 isn't a secret code to be cracked or a random assortment of numbers. It's the postcode of Glenbrook - a town just outside Penrith. 2773 also happens to be the name of a popular restaurant in the Ross Street strip.

The lower Blue Mountains eatery has some comfortable options to kick back in while you wait for that perpetually late friend to arrive.

If you dine here during the summer months be prepared for a little sweat. The heat is soon forgotten as you gaze at the history donning the walls.

Then a member of the friendly waitstaff will approach the table to take your order. This is when you'll realise you've been too distracted to even glance at the reasonably priced, wide variety of menu options.

On one of my more recent visits I opted for the pork belly salad. The pork succulent and the salad fresher than the food people at Woolworths.

I of course shared a friend's fries because that's what friends are for - to let you eat their delicious sweet potato fries with aioli that you neglected to order.

After indulging on a few more fries than might be considered polite, taking the remainder of your own meal home might be required. The lovely waitstaff will even box it up for you, because who wants the awkwardness of spilling stray lettuce leaves on the table?

The restaurant is surrounded by other eateries and fun-to-explore locally run stores. You can purchase lots of homewares, while telling yourself you're just there to window shop.

Next time you're gallivanting around Glenbrook definitely consider stopping by 2773.
