Bright Lights, Big City, Bigger Crowds: Vivid Sydney

Sydney has turned on its lights and they're drawing crowds like moths to a flame. Tonight is your final chance to make like a moth and catch Vivid.

With walkways more congested than flu affected nasal passages and the biggest number of precincts ever, it's impossible to conquer the festival in one visit. Keep reading for tips on some of the free options.

If you hope to gaze at the golden canopy draped over Sydney's Botanic Gardens it would be wise to arrive well before lights on at 6pm. Otherwise, like the villainous Scar suggests, be prepared... to be turned away from the overcrowded precinct.

Walk down to The Rocks via Bridge Street just for the interactive Dance of the Electric Jellyfish.

The Rocks is a great vantage point the view the ever changing images cloaking the Opera House.

Circular Quay is the closest train station. Step out of the station straight into hoards of viewers checking out the spectacular Customs House display.

While strolling to view the Opera House stop to observe the dappled colours skimming across the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Nearby launch into space in a rocket supplied by the Starlight Room.

Skip the kaleidoscope line also in the same tent.

Just near the spacecraft you'll find plenty more photo ops for those lit selfies.

Sydney's iconic harbour bridge deserves a brief glimpse.

When the hunger hits there are plenty of options for a feed. Food trucks and pop up shops line each precinct.

Taste international cuisine at Martin Place. After a bite, suss out the fountain representing real time birth rates.

Then cast your eyes up to mesmerising spotlights dancing across the night sky.

Save time by avoiding The Galeries precinct. You can obtain the same effect by holding a few iPads above your head and watching an old Windows screensaver. Instead, train it over to Central Station, then set off on a short walk to Central Park.

Here you'll find a spot to put your feet up.

You might even come across a silent disco.

Be aware that lights out here is at 10pm - an hour earlier than other precincts.

Come and see the bright lights in the big city!

Even if you miss the festival this year, keep a few nights spare next June. Maybe even catch one of the shows or visit a ticketed precinct like Taronga Zoo. Perhaps by then organisers will develop more effective crowd control measures.

Oh My Foodness: Sake At The Rocks

Hidden amongst a bustling Sydney Sunday in
The Rocks you'll discover Sake - a Japanese restaurant you never knew you needed.

Avoid road rage by catching the train to Circular Quay. Depending on the speed of your steps Sake is just a ten minute walk from the station. Be prepared to take a little longer as you amble past the markets and soak in the soulful sounds of buskers.

Diners are welcomed into the oriental exquisiteness of orchid accents, striking artwork and culinary innovation.

Delicate sushi, silky tofu and crunchy tacos perform splendidly. Flavours are combined into a choir of beautifully balanced harmonies.

The spider maki sushi rolls and prawn tempura maki sushi rolls each offer a sweet symphony that needs to be tasted to be believed. Don't skip the sake tea accompanying some of the dishes. It is a shot of bitterness, but seems necessary for the full dining experience. For a much less bitter beverage opt for the lychee and rose flavours of the Miss Wednesday cocktail.

It might be best to pay the bill with your eyes closed. Rest assured the food and atmosphere are absolutely worth the splurge. Surrender yourself to the oriental decor and cuisine of Sake at The Rocks.
